Dining room and cabin service was friendly, efficient and generally spot-on. Our jolly waiter remembered our preferences and worked with the kitchen staff to accommodate the vegan at our table. When we told our cabin steward she needn't bother with the nightly turndown service -- but we'd appreciate the pillow chocolates -- she delivered a cupful the next morning. The Captain's Dinner is held toward the end of the cruise (not the last night) and people dress up a bit more. AmaLea has a "casual and comfortable" dress code during the day and a "smart casual" guideline for dinner.

The ship's decor is comfortable and casual, with fun patterns that wouldn't seem to go together, but somehow do. The main lounge vibe is also comfortable, with a friendly bar staff and a pianist who, at least on our sailing, was a cut above what you'd normally find. Cabin attendants were diligent about keeping rooms spotless and organized, while front desk clerks, as well as the hotel manager and cruise manager, answered questions frequently and patiently. Africa’s Chobe River supports a diversity and concentration of wildlife unparalleled anywhere else on the continent.

There is, however, an exception when it comes to DIYing your own itinerary. In some destinations, guests can choose between different towns that are usually a 30- to 45-minute bus ride away from the dock. Once at your destination, you can speak with your guide about going off solo—just make sure you don’t miss the ride back to the ship. It's important to note, though, that the ship's gorgeous decor and creature comforts are a backdrop to the experience you'll have on land. AmaWaterways features a nice range of possibilities in each port (most of which come in the complimentary category) that target a variety of travel styles. Highlights include standard tours, themed experiences geared toward interests in areas like art, food and wine, and recreationally oriented expeditions on the bicycles.

AmaWaterways Cruises Into a More Sustainable Future

AmaWaterways has carved out a niche for itself in the river cruise arena with its emphasis on wine and food amid comfortably stylish surrounds. AmaWaterways has carved a niche for itself as offering advanced design with a more active shore experience.

These same cruises provide free bikes and helmets for independent use in port. Dramatic rivers yielding to fairytale towns and iconic cities all come alive as you discover four countries along the storied Rhine and Moselle. On this transformative journey, the Mekong truly reveals a vibrant world along its shores. Journey along paths forged by conquerors, crusaders and kings through Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Austria, and Germany. Step back in time to explore the history and mystery living in the hillsides while cruising the Danube and through the Iron Gates.

But don't worry, if you'd rather relax, tours and accommodations for gentle walkers are also available; several passengers on our voyage had mobility issues that were handled with aplomb (and an elevator runs between three decks). There's also a massage therapist onboard for a truly relaxing indulgence. Discover the magic of Portugal on our Enticing Douro itinerary as we cruise into November and December. Enjoy some of Europe’s mildest winter temperatures during guided hikes and wine tastings. Embark on a journey that caters to discerning tastes and highlights the decadent French flavors throughout the Burgundy region.

Where does AmaWaterways AmaLea sail from?

Iconic Christmas Markets are plentiful and are on full display for your pleasure. Sparkling lights; the festive sounds of children dressed as angels singing carols; enticing smells of hot-mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, sausages and sweet treats of every kind; and timeless wonders are a feast for all your senses. Drink in the beauty, history and flavor of the Rhine and Moselle river valleys’ iconic vineyards. Begin your journey with a gentle ride through Amsterdam’s legendary canals, then head to Cologne where you can whet your palate for the wines ahead by tasting Kolsch beer. As for the vineyards, you’ll soar above them by gondola or hike among the grapes in Rüdesheim and sip wines in Bernkastel as well, learning the legend of the Bernkasteler Doctor. Whatever you choose to do ashore, the stories you’re told and flavors that grace your palate will surely transform you.

Another feature of AmaWaterways is the partnerships that the line has for specialty cruises, and this is one place where AmaLea would shine. Beyond the emphasis that AmaWaterways has on fitness, AmaLea is also used to host biking and hiking trips through the adventure company Backroads. If there was one place we noted less than stellar service, it was in the main dining room; orders were occasionally mixed up or special requests did not arrive. The buffet can get crowded, and it sometimes seemed like servers were overworked.

These cabins are practically identical to the previous category, although they provide slightly more space at 235 square feet. With fewer guests on board, you can enjoy the luxury of space to unwind, relax and reconnect with your loved ones. Our public areas, including lounges and restaurants, are never overcrowded. Enjoy panoramic views and plenty of fresh air in our lavish twin-balcony staterooms that feature both a French balcony and an outside balcony.

Let your inner adventurer out as you hike through vineyards and bike along the rivers. Soar high above the Rhine with a gondola ride in Rüdesheim and above the Moselle with a hike to Reichsburg Castle. Uncover the secrets of Trier’s Porta Nigra—Germany’s oldest city and often referred to as the second Rome. Grand Baroque palaces, whimsical gardens and a plethora of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, provide lovers of enchantment, artists and architectures, historians and connoisseurs of fine wine, beer and food with the best these regions offer. In an increasingly crowded field, AmaWaterways continues to tweak its river cruises to keep up with the latest trends. On AmaLea, the line's 20th ship in the fleet, the changes can be seen in the hardware -- iPads now anchor the cabin air-conditioner -- and programming, with included alcoholic drinks at happy hour (as well as at lunch and dinner).

Let the storybook villages—Bernkastel, Cochem and Wertheim—captivate you; and Rothenburg, located on the Romantic Road enchant you. Marvel at the world's largest ceiling fresco in the Würzburg Residenz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; and the beautiful Chagall windows while in Mainz. Savor the many flavors of Germany with a chance to sample the world-famous wines of the Rheingau, the hearty smoked beer of Bamberg and Rüdesheim’s famed coffee. All along the way, gain an intimate understanding of the history and culture of the places you visit. AmaKristina was the first river cruise ship in the industry to receive the prestigious Green Award, which recognizes ships in Europe for their quality, safety and environmental performance.

Then travel to France’s legendary wine capital, Bordeaux, where your cruise begins. Iconic châteaux, timeless vineyards and delicious wine tastings are plentiful as you visit Libourne, Blaye, Bourg, Pauillac and Cadillac. Following the cruise, enjoy two nights to experience the lure of the UNESCO-designated Loire Valley, where Leonardo da Vinci lived and is buried.

The cruise charter specifies a laytime (period) for loading and unloading the Disney-provided (exclusive) passengers. AmaWaterways offers terrific value-for-money extras on its cruises; these include free and unlimited Wi-Fi (with an unusually fast connection for a cruise ship) and complimentary beer, wine and sodas at lunch and dinner. Premium river cruise line offers solid inclusions, more active shore excursions than most, as well as wine theme cruises.

Some afternoons local cultural groups come onboard to perform and share their heritage. Regional wines and beer are served with lunch and dinner (and a bottle of sparkling wine is on ice by the smoked salmon at breakfast). Comfort is key, since most passengers are out on walking tours or cycling through the countryside. (Good walking shoes able to handle cobbled streets are a must.) Suggested dinner attire is "sophisticated casual" -- collared shirts and slacks for men, and dresses, skirts or dressy pants for women. Even for the weekly Captain's Dinner, a dressy affair on many cruises, the daily program noted guests were welcome to dress up, but it wasn't compulsory; men will be OK if they don't bring a jacket.
